He charished it so much because it belonged to Angeal and they were best friends, even after Angeal turned on Zack he didn't question their friendship, He is the elite of all the SOLDIER it took an entire army just to take him down... That among other things... Main point, Zack is #1, and btw you forgot others like, Genesis, Angeal, Elana, Tseng, etc.
