The Failing of the Mighty Dollar
Posted 12-26-07 at 05:25 PM by Cloud07
My biggest concern is the failings of well... the currency that I mostly use.
The US Dollar has lost so much of it's orginial value and most people do not seem to realize it. For those of us in the United States, we buy most of our products without noticing the slight increase in prices (unless your really good at tracking it). If you look at most of the small items, it's costing more and more to buy it. You can goto a gas station and find that a 20oz coke will run you from 1.59 to 1.79 at time. Back in 1997, you would rarely see it break the .89 plateu. Lol, the housing market? For those who don't have a house yet, the prices of ordinary products are costing an quite abit..
Being stationed overseas now here in Korea, the Korean Won is much stronger than it was 3-4 years ago. In 2003, you was able to purchase 1300 won for about 1 Dollar... now it's about 860-940. Basically what it come down to is is that I cannot buy as much from the Korean economy as I could 4 years ago. The way the prices are starting to match over here, I feel like I'm back in the United States. I mean, eating at most places cost me 5-7 Dollars, including a Hot Pizza which I bought ran me about 9 Dollars here in Korea.
Welcome Ladies and Gentleman to the world of Globalization. The world around us in the US is growing rich as the United States grow poorer(in some aspects). The irony is that when the Dollar becomes too weak, we cannot buy anything from overseas. That means people lose jobs there and they can't buy anything and their prices fall. Yes, that means our Dollar balances back out and rebounds, but what keeps the Dollars so low is the housing market, the credit crunch, foreign borrowing, the war in iraq, and oil. As long as they continue to be a pile of our problems, the Dollar will continue to sink on it's lower end.
Prices at Walmart are low because we buy most of products from overseas. If the prices go up, that means the prices at Walmart go up. Do you realize that it's costing about 7 Dollars to always get some sort of combo meal? The Euro is constantly gaining ground and this is evient because several website I purchase products from are now taking Euro as the main currency.
The Euro has gained so much grounds against the US Dollar that people are now taking more afforadable trips to the US. It's great everyone in the world is able to do that, but at the same time, it's because the Dollar is somewhat failing and failing through. I hope that in 2008, we bring the economy back on track.
That's just my two cents.
Enjoy,
Eric

You know, I've always been good at tracking the increase of the prices on everything.
I've read this blog before, I just didn't care- until about 5 days ago, I went to the grocery store with my parents [I rarely do]. We bought what we usually buy everytime we go grocery shopping. As I've said before it's been a while since I went grocery shopping with them. Somehow the damn prices went from about 60.00$ to 120$ I was like, wtf?! I couldn't believe it. And it's the same amount of groceries that we bought like in last year.... you get what I mean. Oh, and my aunt lost her house cuz the bank wouldn't give her a second mortgage to pay for it.... that sucks. My 2 cents are: I think the govt is raising minimum wages to give them an excuse to raise prices. Then: 16 pck Kraft Cheese- 1.60$ Now: 16 pck Kraft Cheese - 3.99$ ....... I wonder what will happen after bush gets out of office. |
