I've been studying European mythology recently and came across a few things. It's rather depressing actually to know this now.
Square Enix does not technically OWN Final Fantasy, oh sure, they paid the money to have it mass-produced, they're the company on the case. They do all the graphics. But theres one thing they aren't... ORIGINAL! While peering through the Norse Gods and Norse Creation myth I found two things right at the beginning of the article. Midgard and Odinn. So what if they took off the last letter on each of the two words. It's still a part of Norse mythology. I even searched wikipedia page after page on just those two words. Midgard and Odinn.
To save myself from unnecessary typing I will just post the links to the pages.
Please take a look at these. And other Norse, Celtic and Latvian myths, you too may find some depressing facts about Square Enix's Final Fantasy.
Well dear, as a true Viking, I am mad at Japan in general for "stealing" so much. I've known this for way long.
(There's, by the way, only one N in Odin)
those are the words from Norse Mythology WAAAY too used in several videogames.
(though, sometimes they twist the words a little, as if they try to make it their own or something (example=Freya, Nibelheim...))
It makes me annoyed, as they not only just take it, but they pronounce the words so wrong. And I don't see why it should be taken if they can't pronounce it right. *laughs*
Square Enix is the biggest fonds of it. Valkyrie profile is what made me most angry. Valkyrie is Norse. Valkyrie Profile has taken EVERYTHING from Norse mythology. Everything you learn in VP is from Norse Mythology, and then comes the fun part; some of what you learn is wrong. Some of it isn't how it actually was in Norse Mythology, but it's close enough so that you understand that they've just gotten the facts wrong from online searching.
It's very annoying, but I guess, if we have such a fancy old mythology we couldn't expect any less but for it to be stolen by many, eyh? :P
I'll go and pillage them. Haha
As the slight language is only meant to express our annoyance and not to harm, there's no need to worry I believe, darling xD as long as no worse words are said, lol
But now that is sad...here I thought that, yeah the words are "stolen" but at least people know it's from Norse Mythology, they know it's not Squeenix's...but no, you all didn't know...you thought they were original at their namings D: I guess I should've made a topic about this long ago. xD
Vreiðr vas þá Ving-Þórr es vaknaði
ok síns hamars of saknaði;
skegg nam at hrista, skor nam at dýja,
réð Jarðar burr um at þreifask. Ok hann þat orða alls fyrst of kvað
'Heyrðu nú, Square Enix, hvat nú mælik,
es engi veit jarðar hvergi
né upphimins: Áss es stolinn hamri!'
What do you think of every creature? Most of the names from Final Fantasy and most of the monsters are just ripped from ancient myths. Ever heard of the ancient Minotaur? The legendary Hercules fighting the Hydra?
They just managed to turn those mythical names and creatures into a well selling game. That fullfills their goal, making money ;)
Well you should.... If you don't know about your own continent than its pathetic! Lol j/k I don't know **** about North American history or Myths.......... Just Roman, Greek and now.... Norse, Latvian and Celtic....
And ya, I know, they had to be inspired from somewhere.... But not SO many from the same thing, like even if they used two or three words from norse, then two or three words from greek, or something like that than ok..... Sure they need their inspiration..... But NO! They practically use the entire Norse mythology!

Well obviously I know of my own country's old Mythology, I've gotten it hammered into my head since 1th grade, and been repeated the whole thing every year since. xD
And yep, they take way too much from Norse Mythology, making it their own without even mentioning where they got it from, as if that's not important. << Many of the other Mythologies too of course, it's just that it seems like recently Norse Mythology is what everyone take from, without saying where they got it from...blah...lol
(it makes me wonder; does Squeenix know that Scandinavians play their videogames? xD jk)
They don't just do norse mythology. They've done many others. Take shiva and cait sith. Shiva is from hindu mythology and cait sith is a trickster in some other mythology I can't remember the name of....

Yeah...there's a reason why Ifrit is everywhere...they don't take it from Square, but Square alongside them take it from Arabian Mythology, where Ifrit is a jinn of fire, considered a religious creature in the Qur'an. :P
Bahamut is also from Arabian Mythology. Ixion is from Greek Mythology...especially summons/aeons gets names from mythology...
