This has bothered me since I saw the secret ending at the end of DoC. What exactly does Genesis mean that they have work to do? Is he planning on becoming another Sephiroth or will he fight for the planet? Maybe I am just overthinking and some of the answers will come in Crisis Core or perhaps I am just going insane for no reason at all.

Well here is the thing, now that Sephiorth is dead (presumeably right) Genesis was to be the new villain for the Final Fantasy VII chapter. Dirge of Cerberus was meant to close the book on FFVII while leaving a dark cloud on the horizon and the door open for future sequels. NOTE ~ There are no plans for anymore FFVII sequels despite all the misinformed rumors, but Genesis was meant to leave that door open. It goes without saying that even if he can't match Sephiroth, he is exceptionally powerful and insanely dangerous. Anyone who has seen the fight between Genesis and Sephiroth cannot truly say that Genesis wasn't impressive. He is a dangerous foe indeed.

Some of it is explained in Crisis Core, I think there would maybe be another FFVII to finish it off and it would more likely be continued from DoC's secret ending, and seemly there's one called "Endless Crisis" coming out for PS3.
