AS a rule of thumb... No.
And NEVER when I play the game for the first time, or when I play it for the first time in a long while... It kinda ruins the feeling of "actuality" to the storyline or whatever you call it, y'know? It makes it feel more like the "actual" story is what you're watching when you're playing the game.
But a few times, I've changed the names of the characters a bit when replaying.
One time, I named them all after South Park characters! (Cartman, Kyle, Stan, Wendy, Kenny, Bebe, Kitty, etc.)
Another time, when playing after a long while of not playing, I renamed Red XIII to Ashitaka, but ended up regretting it and wishing I'd have just named him Red XIII like the game had. But he DID say: "That name has no meaning to me. Call me whatever you like" so I did! HAHAHA!
But I wished I had just named him Red XIII.
Another time (Or maybe the SAME time as that, I can't remember) I renamed Aeris to Aerith.
Then there was another time I started naming characters after people I knew.
That's about it.
Although I myself was also tempted to call Barret Mr. T that time that I renamed Aeris and/or Red XIII. I think everybody's AT LEAST thought about it AT LEAST once.
